Soil is a very important resource required for the prosperity and survival of mankind as well as for the maintenance of terrestrial ecosystems. Potential production of arable land and its susceptibility to degradation are dependent on the management strategies employed and the inherent soil characteristics. Increased demand and pressure on land resources in recent years have resulted in the competition for land-use, declining crop production and degradation of land quality in areas under agriculture.
