Polystyrene (PS), including expanded (EPS) and extruded (XPS) forms, is one of the most persistent plastic pollutants due to its chemical stability and resistance to natural degradation. Recent studies have shown that Zophobas morio larvae (superworms) possess the ability to ingest and partially biodegrade polystyrene through a combination of mechanical fragmentation and microbial-assisted digestion. This project investigates the efficiency of Z. morio larvae in degrading EPS and XPS, focusing on consumption rates, weight reduction, frass composition, and potential microbial contributors within the larval gut. Understanding these mechanisms may offer a promising, bio-based strategy for mitigating polystyrene waste, contributing to sustainable waste management and circular economy initiatives.
